The English Premier League has announced a new shirt font and sleeve badge for the 2023/24 season. The new numbers and letters plus the sleeve badge will be used when the new season begins on August 12, 2023.

Avery Dennison, a company that specializes in branding and labeling solutions, developed the new typeface. Avery Dennison is the official name, number, and sleeve badge supplier for the EPL.

This is only the fourth time in premier league history that the EPL has changed fonts. It has only changed fonts three times in the past 30 years of football. But unlike the previous changes, the premier league is going for a more subtle evolution instead of a complete overhaul. Only the sleeve badges receive a drastic remodeling.

Clearer Font for the Fans

According to Avery Dennison, the shirt font size increases by about 10 percent. This will make the names and the numbers on the back of the shirt more noticeable to the fans.

The EPL Chief Commercial Officer, Will Brass, said that the league’s intention was to create clearer fonts for fans in the stadium and those watching on TV while incorporating the Premier League brand more readily.

“The names and numbers have become part of the fabric of the Premier League. For fans, having the name and number of a favorite player, their own name, or even a personal message helps to bring them closer to the competition and their favorite clubs,” he said.

Evolution, not Revolution

EPL clubs will have the option of white, black, red, yellow, or navy printing on the kits for the new font. The name sets will stay as before, with the name being printed straight or curved depending on the length of the name.

In addition to the new shirt font, the Premier League sleeve badge has been redesigned for the upcoming season to a standalone iconic Premier League lion.

The 2022/23 Premier League champions will have the logo in gold for next season.

Simon Allen, a director at Avery Dennison, said that the new changes were more evolutionary than revolutionary.
